HPGC's Marnie Owens interviewed Michele at Larchmont Florist. Here are some photos of three arrangements Michelle did for a small event at our house this summer. I like that she can do many different styles. These arrangements show her more organic free flowing style.
How did you become interested in the flowers and creating flower arrangements?
Ever since I was little, I was always exposed to the beauty of flowers because my mom always had them growing outside of our home. After I had my daughter, my husband encouraged me to start taking floral arranging classes. I heard a space was available on Larchmont in 1996, so we bought the store together and this is how I started my career in this industry.
What was your first foray in the flower business?
I first started off doing small weddings and then my business grew from there.
What is your signature style - if there is one how would you describe?
I would describe my style as an English garden style. I love the colors and textures, and the variations and character that each type of flower brings. How has your style changed or evolved? Over the years, I learned and adapted my style through my customers. I learn the most from them. They challenge me creatively and push me to try new things.
What is your favorite flower to work with and why?
My favorite flower is sweet peas. I love their sweet and delicate scent and their beautiful colors. They are so pretty on their own.
Where does your inspiration come from?
Nature and traveling around the world.
Are there styles you avoid?
Yes, I prefer more of an organic style, so I try to avoid looks that are too “structured”.
Are there flowers you avoid?
Usually I try to avoid carnations and baby’s breath.
What is one of the longer lasting flowers you use?
Orchids tend to last a very long time, as well as other flowers like dubium and lysimachia.
What do you think is the best way to keep flowers arrangements fresh?
The best way to keep flower arrangements fresh is to change the water often and keeping them in cool areas.
Chose 3 words to describe your style?
Organic, natural, and adaptable.
Any unusual requests?

Stick to what you like and your own personal style.
When did your daughter start working with you? Was she always interested in the business?
My daughter started helping me out at the store at a younger age and has recently started taking on more responsibilities. It’s been so great being able to work together and teach her what I know.
