Your Next Front Yard

With the recent five year drought, concern about water use in landscaping, and the current trend of tearing out front lawns and replacing them with unique landscapes, our neighborhood of vast green open expanses of lawn framing historic architecture, suddenly look very different than they did even five years ago. The HPGC decided it is time to explore what our urban landscape used to look like, how it is changing, and if we could identify some guidelines to maintain some visual continuity in this very special architectural neighborhood.

The HPGC signed a contract with urban designer John Kaliski and landscape architect Takako Tajima to provide research and share concepts on the future idea, shape and form of the front lawn in Hancock Park and surrounding communities. The study will be shared with the greater Hancock Park community in written and digital pamphlets in the fall of 2017 through outreach meetings with community members.

The "Your Next Front Yard" project will research historic streetscape photos, observe existing conditions and come up with a thoughtful set of guidelines intended to help residents who are seeking to alter their yards from the green lawns of yesteryear, to more water-wise front yards, while still preserving some visual continuity, historic references and the open visual sight lines the neighborhood has long benefited from.
