HPGC Supporting Three Projects in 2019

In March the HPGC Board approved grant funding to three organizations in the area that are helping green Los Angeles: Grown in LA, The LA Neighborhood Land Trust and the Garden School Foundation.

A grant was awarded to Grown in LA (GiLA) which is working to increase the amount of locally-collected and locally-grown native plant material in Los Angeles by creating a network of nurseries on underutilized sites in the LA region. Given the growing need for native plant material for public properties, including sizable LA River restoration projects, and the fact that there are very few nurseries providing local plant material, GiLA hopes to help fill this need. HPGC grant funds will toward developing the propagation area of the 11-acre old Commonwealth Nursery in Griffith Park. GiLA is helping to renovate the site so it can be brought back to life through plant production, research, education, and demonstration.

The LA Neighborhood Land Trust also received support from HPGC for the second year in a row to fund the purchase of additionally needed tools, supplies, garden infrastructure and plant material for their existing portfolio of community gardens in underserved urban areas of Los Angeles. This second grant follows on last year's tool grant which was utilized immediately and enthusiastically by the Land Trust.

The Garden School Foundation was delighted to receive a small grant from the HPGC for the 24th Street Elementary School Native Plant Garden. The grant will go toward refreshing the native plant garden through continued maintenance, plant materials and installation of some additional new native plants. Representatives from the Founders Fund of the Garden Club of America will be visiting in June to see the site, which the national fund contributed to in 2006.
