April Gardening To-Do List
PLANT: Last cool season for vegetables..... plant beets, carrots, kale, chard, cilantro, parsley spinach, and heat resistant lettuce.
Wait until the end of the month or the beginning of May to plant tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, squash, melon eggplant, and peppers. These vegetables will struggle in cool soil and never get a good start. If you are planting in boxes, however, the soil will be warm before the ground.
You can sow or plant herbs now.
Plant citrus, pomegranate, avocado, tropical fruits like guava and mango now through June.
Plant summer bulbs, plant pollinator flowers and flowers that will attract beneficial insects....both annuals and perennials.
FEED: Vegetables every 6 weeks. Roses after first bloom. Fruit trees. Citrus like feeding every 8 weeks, compost around the trees but keep it away from the trunk.
PRUNE: Ground covers, dead wood on trees, shrubs, and perennials.
MULCH: Weed first, then spread 2-4 inches mulch on bare ground. If the ground is hard you might want to break it up and dig in some compost before mulching. Leave some spots bare for nesting native bees.
